The Kind Greetings

Bye Hong (Curator, Gallery King)

Greeting takes diverse forms, varied across countries. In a way, it is a point of convergence where cultural differences are condensed and manifested. However, in current era of globalization, uniformity dominates divergence and individuals exist as alienated under the shadow of fetishized ideology. Moreover, the distinct social and cultural characteristics of Korea create complex and delicate point where individuals in modern society clash with traditional value. The exhibition “The Kind Greetings” displays, in a light and humorous way, the relationship between individual and the society surrounding the greetings, which is an aspect of the culture.

The artist targets bus drivers and security guards of apartment buildings whom people easily encounter in everyday life. Focused on awkwardness shown during the acts of ‘kindness’, especially on the awkward smiles, the delicate observation of the artist emerges in all pieces. To accomplish her purpose, the artist painted deep colors of boon-chae(oriental powdered ink) and acrylic in part, to emphasize the disparateness of awkward smile by contrasting Chinese ink with colors.

“I wanted to capture awkward looks, neither with big smiles nor expressionless, and maximize their effects in painting to illustrate ‘awkwardness’ and ‘uneasiness,’ which are somewhat incomplete and much commonly observed in our reality, through the pieces.”

As explained in the note of the artist above, people and objects from the artist’s (individual’s) everyday life, which are overflowing the pictures, exaggerate the reality. However, it generates curiosity rather than boundlessness to face the immense reality, because of the unfamiliar and disparate feeling generated by the awkward smiles and objects such as hat (pattern and text), glasses and gold tooth, expressed by the artist. That feeling is also created by the interruption of communication or the clash of relationships. The pieces also reveals the pattern of relationship between individuals and society because the persons (or object) expressed by the artist functions as representations of the current times. The paintings make the audience experience the dead-end of communication by letting them face the inevitable reality. However, it is not desperate. On the contrary, the humorous expression assists to effectively find the language to be used in communication, which is severed from the contradictive social ideology caused by those clashes. Through this, the artist does not propose a solution to the clash between the individual and the society but delivers to the audience the idea that there is a problem in ‘being somewhat incomplete.’

Therefore, the exhibition ‘The Kind Greetings’ provides the audience with the opportunity to extend the scope of recognition to all social problems by humorously showing inconvenient aspects of the greetings, which is a part of etiquette inhering in current Korean society.
