Politeness Lesson

Choi, Jeong-Hee (Curator, Seoul Museum of Art)

When we are children, we live our lives freely expressing our emotions and opinions. We laugh when feeling good, cry when something is wrong and nothing is necessary if not. There is no problem and nobody misunderstands our intensions, even if we behave like this. It is because we are not liable for our expressions of emotion or looks on our faces. However, the situation changes when we grow up. Thrown into a bigger society than a family and positioned among various members of it, we get to live displaying numerous social and psychological personas, different from our original ones. Irrespective of our true feelings, we get to show a required disposition depending on our situations and positions, as a student, an employee of a company, or sometimes, as a military man. In the middle of these interactions through the disguised persona, there are ‘greetings.’ Greeting, which is usually regarded as a tool for showing respect to others, is a basic element of social activity and a factor to understand the relationships between people. Therefore, by analyzing the greeting, an independent cultural entity, we could analyze the relationship and the distance between people in a certain society, and their inner mentality. Generally, greeting is done between people who already know each other. It is especially true in Korea where it is rare to greet strangers. However, there are several cases when greeting is exchanged between strangers. One of the examples is the greeting coming from the professional obligation, shown by people in the service industry such as security guards, bus drivers and sales persons. Their duty of greeting, mostly given with the custom of wearing uniforms, tends to be displayed with dutiful gestures and expressions. And their individual feelings and intensions are hidden under the uniforms.

The artist Yumi Chung, focuses on these ‘greetings’ as an object and a subject of her work. Especially, by observing the awkward situations created by the dutiful greetings, she reads the gap in the peoples’ behavioral habit in everyday lives, including greetings, and expresses it as the paintings. While she is a Korean painting artist who is faithful in ‘painting’ the picture exploring the traditional materials and skills, she also carries out the role of an observer of the culture. ‘Greeting’ is a unique starting point as an object of the painting. In addition, the use of ‘Ajossi (Korean term for calling adult male friendly; can be translated as man or uncle in English),’ as the figure subject and medium to express the greetings is very interesting too. It is not common that ‘Ajossi’, not ‘Ajuma (Korean term for calling adult female friendly; can be translated as woman or aunt in English),’ especially those who belong to the occupational group of security guards or bus drivers among various members of our society, is observed and highlighted.

In the most of the artist’s paintings, faces of men (‘Ajossi’s) with uneasy smile are featured. They are again divided by the close-ups of one person and group pictures. The titles given to each kind of these pieces are and , which itself assists to expand the width of our thinking to the similar aspects within our culture. It is because the expression ‘Kimchi~’ used when taking pictures (similar to ‘cheese~’ in English speaking culture), has the same context of artificiality and intentionality like ‘the dutiful and awkward greeting.’ Other than these paintings of faces and groups, recent series of her work features the objects which act as the motives of the men’s facial expressions, such as hat and brassard.

For a start, let’s take a look at the characteristics of the men in the paintings. Their faces showing the typical look of middle-aged men in Korea, have saggy wrinkled eyes, flat nose and mouth with gold tooth, all expressed in detail with Korean ink. Their looks on the faces, staring at the front, all have uneasy smiles. Their eyes sometimes are hidden under the glasses or sunglasses, but they all show awkward smiles. Actually, according to the artist, mouth and the muscles around the mouth are more important than eyes to decide the facial expressions. Their bare faces like these are portrayed with dense but soft strokes by layering the light ink multiple times.

Next, let’s study other elements than face, depicted with Boon-chae (oriental powdered color) and acrylic. Sunglasses and reading glasses most characters wear in the paintings have yellow gold frames whose quality of primary color is also discovered in gold tooth. Their indifference is shown by the fact they have replaced one of their front teeth with gold one without any hesitance, unlike young people. The same indifference can be found from the sticker still attached to their glasses, showing its diopter. The colors used to paint the clothes of the bus driver and security guard, yellow and blue, are based on the typical colors of the kinds. Another essential element in the paintings is the cap, which has words like ‘kindness’ or store names on it. Together with those large sized words, images of eagle or laurels are embroidered with vivid yellow color. The cap with much decoration is said to represent the ‘chief security guard.’ All these elements, in contrast to the faces described with light ink, are painted with vivid and strong colors of Boon-chae and acrylic. The feeling of heterogeneity, created by this contrast, makes these paintings not remain as just portraits but function as the collection of symbols which help to interpret the art pieces. It is also interesting that such symbols located as clues in the picture are the objects which draw little attention from people at ordinary times. The difference from the portraits or the various possibility of interpretation is emphasized again by the close-ups, which took only necessary parts, and the enlarged size of the picture. And if the work of her early stage started with the description of person, recent work shows the expressions of face as images the artist views based on her memory and the instant esquisses. The result can be said that the group of people is materialized, in the way the artist views.

The most important factor to be read off the whole paintings is their ‘facial expression.’ Even from the picture depicted only cap and brassard, without any face, it is possible to naturally imagine the person’s look hidden behind by the objects’ symbolistic character. The cap sometimes is pictured with the same angle, which is created when the person greets. Their awkward looks, coexisting with the word ‘kindness’ given due to their duty, entail the exact gap between their external and internal states. On the other hand, the expressed uneasiness has the double feature to provide the audience with somewhat pleasant feeling or comicality. In regards to the awkward looks depicted in the paintings, the artist does not limit herself referring to people in a certain occupational group or middle aged Korean men who are not used to express their emotion, but relates them to overall disposition of Korean people. It is hard to exchange natural greetings for Koreans because we care for others’ eyes much more than the Westerners and it is not easy to harmonize our behavior and mind. According to the observation made by the artist, and as we could generally assume, the other people cannot respond naturally either, regardless of their true feelings, to the greetings of those men in the pictures. Not only revealing this reality, the artist had expressed through her statement her hope towards some changes in our culture of greeting, and moreover in the method of communication, through mutual understanding and communication created by her paintings. From this, we could think of the artist’s role as more than just the observer of the culture.

Although we all are living in the same world, there are people who capture the world with unique perspective and illustrate it with their own language. They are the artists. Whether it is a reproduction, transformation or criticism of the world, reading their perspectives becomes our shelter or food for thought in everyday lives. Especially, in today’s diversified domain of art, the role and the influence of the artist are so manifold that it cannot be defined as one. They go beyond the stage of thinking and exploring their inner mind and present opinions and interpretations about the outside world. Sometimes, they even execute projects more vigorously than social activists. However, the recent trend shows that their method is different from the Populace art, which directly voiced their criticism in the past. Their recent method is mainly constituted with an individual’s effort, as an observer or researcher, to smoothly blend the opinion in their work which has contemplative characteristics. As their work is mostly executed through muti-media projects such installation, movies and new media, the paintings of Yumi Chung, which belong to the category of Korean painting, can have unique appeal. It is because although she is pursuing the art by ‘painting’ which is regarded as a traditional method, based on the material used in Korean painting, her study on the materials is related to the construction of the content and she tries to interpret the social situation and indication. This is another reason that her work could acquire rarity even though it uses the most basic medium of art, the painting. Especially when the representational paintings of recent up and comers have the heavy tendency of hyperrealism, Neo-pop or surrealism, following the market principles, it is more expected that Yumi Chung’s effort in constructing her world of art through the method of painting with her own perspective, could have meaningful results.
